The wood we harvest from our forests supplies a world-class manufacturing sector that supports tens of thousands of primarily rural jobs across the UK.
Forestry and timber processing includes the entire cycle of forestry from planting seeds, to forest management, to harvesting and haulage through to primary processing (e.g. sawmills, wood-based panels like OSB and MDF, and wood for fuel).
Our forests provide excellent opportunities for recreation, education and tourism.
Modern productive forests are being developed to improve access to local people and visitors including hikers. Here's a great example of that kind of cooperation in action.
Did you know that UK forest cover is just 13%, compared to our European neighbours where it averages 36%?
The contribution of forestry to Scotland's economy alone has increased to £954 million GVA - rising 30% since the 2008 recession.
Over 80% of this revenue comes from forestry and timber processing, and 20% comes from forest recreation and tourism. Employment levels continue to increase throughout the UK today, with tens of thousands of Full Time Equivalent people working in the sector.
