Director, Forwoods Forestry & Woodland Consultancy Ltd
Matt has taken Forwoods Forestry & Woodland Consultancy Ltd to Net Zero for Scopes 1 and 2 in the last year and is committed to the cause of reducing carbon emissions throughout the business.
The significant positive impact Forwoods has had on advancing its Net Zero goals along with the efforts in woodland creation have not only reduced their own environmental footprint but have also contributed to increased carbon sequestration and the reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
Forwoods becoming Net Zero in 2024 is significant as it is pioneering in its vision and commitment to environmental and corporate sustainability. It is one of the first woodland consultancy businesses to achieve this status in the UK and, as such, will hopefully act as a catalyst to inspiring others.
Forest and Peatland Development Manager, The University of Edinburgh
Yvonne has been instrumental in the development of the Forest & Peatland Programme which supports the University’s Net Zero by 2040 ambition to sequester 1,000,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. This involved purchasing three sites totalling 891ha, and entering long-term partnerships to create woodland and restore peatland over 4,500ha.
Yonne has worked in close partnership with local communities to ensure the woodland design delivers multiple benefits – including enhancing biodiversity, celebrating local cultural heritage, and teaching and research opportunities.
She has also been influential in the identification and setting up of multi-decade partnerships with landowners across Scotland. This has allowed partners to realise their own ambitions for sustainable woodland expansion and habitat restoration. This in turn has contributed to rural development, employment, and opportunities for rural business diversification.
NexGen tree guards ensure wool is used sustainably for broadleaf trees grown in perpetuity to improve biodiversity and water quality and landscape value. This circular economy model of wool to tree to landscape amenity, allows Scotland to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss whilst supporting agriculture and forestry.
As a company, they have been strong advocates for Net Zero goals, not just by replacement of plastic in the environment, but also through supporting other organisations and groups who are working towards Net Zero. For example, bringing woodlands back into management and supporting products to improve the soil biome.
From the outset, NexGen has sought to develop a product that biodegrades slowly without being persistent, bio-accumulative or toxic (PBT) in the environment. The industry needs and demands a product like NexGen’s if it is to succeed in its carbon and environmental goals.
Providing a greener, leaner, safer, smarter way of transporting building materials, The Pallet LOOP is shifting UK construction from the current approach of 'delivering, distributing and discarding' pallets to the principles of ‘recover, repair, reuse’.
After lobbying the construction industry to adopt its circular economy pallet reuse scheme for several years, The Pallet LOOP is now delivering change. The company’s distinctive green reusable pallets are now transporting bagged plaster and plasterboard products for British Gypsum – one of the biggest building material manufacturers in the UK.
The Pallet LOOP’s use of RFID tags is particularly innovative. Scanning pallets in and out of its sites provides accurate information about the number of pallets issued to customers and recovery rates. Scanning also gives returning companies fascinating insights about the financial and carbon savings they are achieving by using LOOP.
