Welsh Timber Industry Strategy Consultation
Huw Irranca-Davies MS, the Deputy First Minister for Wales and Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Climate Change, has launched a consultation on a strategy to promote the Welsh Timber Industry.
Confor has pressed for such a strategy to ensure our forests are productive, produce the type of wood required for key sectors such as housebuilding and construction, and to facilitate the skills development needed to support that.
The Forestry and the Wood processing sector plays an important role in the Welsh rural economy. The forestry industry in Wales is worth £680m every year to the Welsh economy and supports around 11,300 jobs as well as contributing significantly to Welsh climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon in both growing trees and the wood products manufactured from harvested timber.
Consultation documents are available via Welsh Government and responses are open until 16 April 2025.
Confor will be submitting a consultation response on behalf of the industry. We also encourage as many members as possible to engage with this consultation.
A draft response has been prepared through collaboration with Welsh Committee members. Please use this as a basis for your own response and share with colleagues, contractors, landowners, and anyone else you feel will be impacted by the Welsh Timber Industry Strategy.
