Forestry Consultant

17 November 2025

RTS Forestry

You will be based in our head office in Crieff, with some opportunity for part home working. Projects will require site visits across Scotland and Northern England.

Full-time, Permanent

As a Forestry Consultant, you will play a key role in ensuring forestry considerations are addressed
within the planning and development process. Our consultancy team works with developers and lead
environmental consultancies to provide forestry input on infrastructure projects such as overhead power lines,
wind farms and renewable energy developments.

Every project is unique, but typical responsibilities will include:

  • Forestry Impact Assessments: Assessing potential impacts of development route options on
woodland and trees, advising on route refinements, and contributing to scoping reports.
  • Planning & EIA Support: Preparing forestry chapters or appendices for Environmental Impact
Assessments, structured to demonstrate significant effects, proposed mitigations, and responses to
    scoping consultations.
  • Mapping & Analysis: Producing GIS-based maps to identify required infrastructure felling, management
    felling and associated impacts.
  • Mitigation & Compensatory Planting: Developing mitigation strategies, including compensatory
    planting schemes.
  • Tree Crop Compensation (TCC): Carrying out yield class assessments, stratification of data,
valuations, and negotiations with landowners or project managers to agree professional TCC
    settlements.
  • Client Liaison: Attending project meetings, advising developers, lead consultancies, landowners,
Scottish Forestry and planning authorities throughout the planning and delivery stages.

Alongside planning-related consultancy, you will also, for some projects, play an important part in ensuring
smooth handover for the delivery of tree clearance works for the consented project to our Infrastructure division,
supporting delivery for the forestry element of the overall project. This important involvement in design through
to implementation is seen by our clients as significantly important in that it ensures the prescribed forestry works
within the planning process can be effectively and efficiently delivered. You will be working independently with
opportunities to collaborate on an interesting mix of field work, data analysis, report writing, and planning input.

You will have the following:

  • Diploma or Degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, or a related rural subject
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in forestry, ecology, or consultancy (experience with FGS and /or
    planning-related forestry consultancy)
  • Understanding of UK Forestry Standards (UKFS), relevant planning/forestry legislation
  • A desire to develop experience preparing technical reports in support of planning applications and EIAs
  • Proficiency in GIS for mapping and analysis
  • Knowledge of tree surveying and hazard/risk assessment methodologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills in order to manage multiple projects
  • Full UK driving licence, with flexibility to travel across Scotland and Northern England

In return we can offer a highly competitive salary package and other staff benefits.

This is a unique opportunity to join a consultancy team at an exciting stage of our growth, working on nationally
significant renewable energy infrastructure projects where your expertise directly influences planning outcomes
and sustainable woodland management.
